The recent introduction of Google+ has been fodder for much Google-versus-Facebook discussion. At the center of the discussion has been the Circles component of Google+, which allows users to arrange their contacts in meaningful clusters (for example, “family” and “work”) and share different content with different clusters. 8 Lessons to Learn from Past Social Media Debacles
In many ways, social media represents a dangerous space. Customers have an easy means by which to share negative stories with millions of people and companies now have to communicate back, often publicly too. Customers themselves are appearing in brand spaces, and companies have to let them. In this process, through openness and an increase in the sheer quantity of communication, mistakes are bound to happen – some more preventable than others.
The following shows 8 different kind of mistakes companies have made in the past, including examples, from which we can distil lessons and learn how to potentially avoid them.

An Executive’s Guide to Social Media
When an executive grapples with social media marketing, he or she might feel a lot like I do when taking my car to the mechanic. There’s a lot I don’t know; there’s a lot I don’t want to know. I’m not sure of the accuracy of what I’m being told, and I question the motives of the person who’s telling me. I’d just as soon ignore the slight rattle in my engine, but I know if I do, there will be hell to pay later. Reluctantly, skeptically – I take action.
With this in mind, here are four recommendations that can help overcome the trepidation and put you in the social media driver’s seat.

How To Protect Your Brand From Facebook Bullies
What should you do when someone posts nasty things on your brand’s page?
Some advise that you never, ever delete negative posts because that might motivate the poster to write their complaints elsewhere — the complainer could also come right back and post on your own wall that you deleted the previous posting.
Dealing with a defamatory post is not that black and white — it is important to note there are no absolutes in social media because you are dealing with human behavior, which is unpredictable.

The Changing Media Landscape – Is There a Solution?
New media has completely transformed the way consumers gather news and information. While it has created many new opportunities, it has also brought about numerous challenges to traditional media and even contributed to, what some consider, dying business models.
The big question in all this is, how will media continue to evolve? This is exactly what the FCC and the FTC sought out to do some 2 years ago. When the effort began, it seemed to lean heavily in the direction of saving journalism, namely, struggling media enterprises. In 2010, the FTC released its “Potential Policy Recommendations to Support the Reinvention of Journalism,” which was received with much criticism.
Since then, the FTC has not been involved with the effort. The FCC, however, recently released its own “Future of Media” report called “The Information Needs of Communities: The Changing Media Landscape in a Broadband Age.” This report was met with both criticism and praise.

The Shrinking of the Non-Social Web
Is the web shrinking? It is according to Ben Elowitz, founder and CEO of WetPaint. He recently wrote a very interesting guest post for AllThingsD about this topic.
“People are spending more time on Facebook and less time on the rest of the web,” he tells WebProNews. “If you look at the total amount of time people spent on Facebook from March 2010 to March 2011, it grew 69%. And if you look at the total amount of time people spent on the rest of the web, it fell 9%.

39 Things You Should Know About Google+
This isn’t every single thing there is to know about Google+. That could probably be a book rather than an article, and the Google+ Project has only just begun. If Google has its way, it will live on for years. Or it could go the Google Wave route. It’s just too early to tell.
