4 Rules For Perfect Facebook Community Management
Have you ever found yourself talking to, or even shouting at, your television? Perhaps during a big game or a scary movie? What about in the middle of a commercial for a product you like — or strongly dislike?
The most frustrating part of that situation is that the TV can’t talk back. Not yet, anyway.
But Facebook pages can. Unforunately, brands fail to respond to 95 percent of posts made on their Facebook walls.
This means that most brands are turning Facebook, one of the most dynamic back-and-forth platforms in the history of creation, into a TV or newspaper — providing content without engaging in a truly two-way conversation.

The State Of Social Media 2011: Social Is The New Normal
The state of social media is no insignificant affair. Nor is it a conversation relegated to a niche contingent of experts and gurus. Social media is pervasive and it is transforming how people find and share information and how they connect and collaborate with one another. I say that as if I'm removed from the media and cultural (r)evolution that is digital socioeconomics. But in reality, I'm part of it just like everyone else. You and I both know however, that' I'm not saying anything you don't already know.
Social media is clearly becoming the new normal. For the last several years, simply adding the word "social" in front of anything and everything from media and gaming to commerce and CRM to business and consumerism, it's clear that we are finally approaching the end of the hype curve to start making sense of what it all means and just how far it applies to the future of business and media.

The Top Five Mobile Marketing Mistakes
Two years ago, there was no such thing as an iPad. Five years ago, nobody had a smartphone. Before 2007, the year of the iPhone, mobile marketing was mostly about text-messaging and selling ringtones. The bottom line is that everyone is new at this thing called mobile marketing. So, it should be no surprise that marketers are still working out the kinks.
For the past few years I’ve seen companies big and small repeat the same mobile marketing mistakes. If you’re planning a mobile marketing campaign, you can save some time and money by learning from where they've gone wrong. Here are the top five mobile marketing mistakes and how you can avoid repeating them as you roll out your next campaign.

How to use Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Foursquare via SMS
Staying social while your mobile doesn’t mean you have to pay for a data plan. Using SMS, you can update and receive status messages from your favorite social networks using the messaging plan you probably already have.
Using social networks via Short Message Service (SMS) will not only cut down on your mobile phone bill, it will also increase your phone’s battery life, and allow you to stay up to date with social networks without needing a smartphone. Being able to send a simple SMS makes updating fast and available on every mobile phone available today (so long as your plan supports it). During busy situations like natural disasters and large events, SMS is also much more reliable than data plans which makes it ideal if you just need to get the word out about where you are.

Mobilize Your Social Media MarketingMore than 200 million Facebook users access Facebook from mobile devices every month, according to Facebook. If your business wants its share of those mobile eyeballs, it’s time to combine your social media marketing with mobile marketing.
Some consumers have embraced mobile-social interactions without much interference from marketers, mostly because the major social networks seem to have been relatively slow in developing opportunities to market to mobile-social users. That doesn’t mean you have to be as slow moving.
Here are three ways you can drive more social-mobile interactions with your business while you wait for more abundant social-mobile marketing opportunities to emerge.

How the 10 Most Popular Facebook Brands Rank by Engagement [Chart]
FacebookLast week, Facebook unveiled a new public metric to gauge the success of a Facebook Page beyond its Like count. The feature, called “People Talking About,” calculates user-initiated activities on a Page, including posts, comments, Likes, mentions, shares, poll votes, photo tags and checkins.
Not surprisingly, those brands with the greatest number of Likes don’t necessarily rank as highly against the new metric, according to data from Famecount.

Social Media Around The World - 2011
Here is a great SlideShare presentation showcasing a whole bunch of statistics, observations and facts on the uptake, experience and use of social media (and a little mobile) from around the world in 2011. It’s 167 slides and well worth the read if you’ve got 20-30 mins (or 10 for a speed flick!), so perhaps it’s time to grab a coffee then come back for a click through the presentation.
A few of the pull outs are… 2 out of 3 employees are socially proud of their employer, 12% of all smart phone users use location based services (with only 20% of them checking-in each day), Only 4% of smartphone users are familiar with Augmented Reality, 73% of all Europeans are a member of at least one social network, MySpace still has 70% social awareness, over 50% of people have deleted a friend on a social network, 42% of people have had a real conversation with a brand online, 61% of people are happy to provide user feedback with trailing/using a product.

The Rise of the Distributed Agency Model
Across the world, but particularly within the web design industry, the distributed agency model has gained widespread popularity. Centered on the idea of working remotely, more businesses are adopting the distributed agency model as a practical and beneficial alternative to keeping an in-house staff.
The distributed agency model, or “virtual agency,” as it’s sometimes called, is simply an agency that hires and collaborates with workers remotely. The team might be made up of full or part-time employees, freelancers, contractors, partners, etc. These employees might be spread across a particular city or over the entire world. In short, a distributed team is location-agnostic.

How To Supercharge Movie Marketing On Facebook
Film marketing on Facebook continues to get savvier, but there’s still room for more improvement. Here are some suggestions to that end.
Set up the fan page early –- at least one month ahead of the release, but up to a year. The earlier the release the more time there is to develop a community and understand the style of communication that resonates best with it.
For locally produced film titles, the producer can set up the page and distributor can take it over once the marketing cycle starts. This should be stated in the marketing agreement if the film’s production and launch is shared between several companies.

Why Facebook Works for All, Twitter for Some
A website’s interface and functionality can change everything about the experience of visitors and readers. In a concise reflective piece where tech writer Nick Bilton is having dinner with his little sister, he compares the two platforms.
Twitter has 100 million users, 50% of which Tweet regularly. Facebook has 500 million active daily users. Why the stark discrepancy?
The guiding idea is that though Twitter is simpler and more basic, it is also more confusing. Nick reflects on why Facebook has surpassed Facebook so dramatically in the numbers:

Does Facebook Fan-Gating Hurt Facebook Engagement?
Fan-gating is accomplished by creating two versions of a tab on your page—one that’s shown to users who already Like your page and one to those who have not Liked the page.
The non-fans are encouraged to Like in order to “unlock” the content behind the tab. Because information about whether a user has Liked your page is easily accessible through Facebook’s Graph API, it is relatively easy to implement a gate, or “reveal tab” as it is sometimes called. There are many companies that provide tools to do this and a list of some of them can be found here.
The reason to fan-gate is fairly obvious: to increase the number of Likes by making it a requirement to access something that is presumably desirable to your fans. This could mean access to download a white paper, receive a coupon or participate in a contest.
However, this begs the question of the value of a required Like. Should this individual be considered a true fan? Is he or she likely to remain engaged with your brand after accessing whatever content you have gated?

The 20 Brands With The Most Loyal Customers
Although companies spend billions each year to try to make their brands resonate with consumers, few ever end up with truly fanatic customers. But the perks are huge for those who do.
Loyal customers consistently come back to buy more, they’re more willing to stay despite increases in price and they become strong advocates for the brand in their own social circles and online.
Brand Keys, a research firm devoted to consumer behavior metrics, recently updated its 2011 Customer Loyalty Engagement Index, which looks at 528 big brands in 79 categories — from smartphones to allergy medicines. Through a combination of psychological assessments and statistical analyses of customers, Brand Keys determined how much brands exceed what consumers expect, and how loyal they will be down the road. Here are the 20 brands with the most loyal customers.

5 Brands That Are Surprisingly Successful on Facebook
When Facebook became a big deal a couple of years ago, it was fairly easy to predict that some brands would quickly become popular there.
It didn’t take a genius to see that, for example, Starbucks would have a big following. The brand has a tech-savvy clientele who are frequently filing a status update from one of the chain’s many locations. (Full disclosure: This story is being written at a Starbucks.) Likewise, you’d have to try hard to screw up Coca-Cola’s inevitable path to Facebook success, and at times it appeared that Coke was trying to do just that.
What is surprising as you go down the list of the top Facebook brands, though, is how random it appears. The list doesn’t remotely match up to what are judged to be the top global brands.

How Today's Hottest Startups Got Their Names
There are no rules to naming a startup. And most entrepreneurs do assume that the name they choose will change before their businesses really start to gain momentum.
Consequently, it doesn’t shock us that some of our favorite startups were sired by picking names out of hats, by throwing out odd proper nouns that might be cheap domain names and by haphazardly removing vowels.
Ever wonder what a “Twitter” is, or who the “Hipmunk” is? We’ve asked nine startups to share the story behind their names.

For Brand Advertising, Data Still Trumps Creative
The latest figures for online ad spending looked pretty good for the first half of the year, but as the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s report shows, even though display is rising, the “premium” impression-based ads still have a long way to go to catch up to performance-based ads, which tend to be of the cheaper, “click here” variety. A study from ad tech firm Collective suggests that agencies and marketers are still getting used to the internet as a branding medium. Plus, even as display begins to offer more dazzling creative opportunities, it’s the data that matters more to ad buyers.
